Acoustics Reveals Short?Term Air Temperature Fluctuations Near Mars' Surface

چکیده
Acoustics is new on Mars: it allows the characterization of turbulence at smaller scales than previously possible within lowest part Planetary Boundary Layer. Sound speed measurements, by SuperCam instrument and its microphone onboard NASA Perseverance rover, allow retrieval atmospheric temperatures 0.77 m above ground, 3 Hz, with a ?10 ms response time that 20 to 100 times shorter for typical thermocouple sensors used Mars. Here we report first measurements sound speed-derived temperature fluctuations near surface. Data highlight large rapid up ±7 K/s, whose amplitude over such timescale has never been reported, nor predicted models. These follow daytime pattern occasional high events are likely due conjunction low thermal inertia strong winds.

Evaluation of MODIS Land Surface Temperature Data to Estimate Near-Surface Air Temperature in Northeast China
Air temperature (Tair) near the ground surface is a fundamental descriptor of terrestrial environment conditions and one of the most widely used climatic variables in global change studies. The main objective of this study was to explore the possibility of retrieving high-resolution Tair from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) products, cove...
متن کاملNear-Surface Air Temperature Retrieval Derived from AMSU-A and Sea Surface Temperature Observations
A 10-m air temperature (Ta) retrieval using Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit A (AMSU-A) and satellite-derived sea surface temperature (Ts) observations is presented. The multivariable linear regression retrieval uses AMSU-A brightness temperatures from the 52.8and 53.6-GHz channels and satellite-derived daily sea surface temperatures to determine Ta. A regression error of 0.838C using 841 match...
متن کاملMembrane fluctuations near a plane rigid surface.
We use analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to determine the thermal fluctuation spectrum of a membrane patch of a few tens of nanometer in size, whose corners are located at a fixed distance d above a plane rigid surface. Our analysis shows that the surface influence on the bilayer fluctuations can be effectively described in terms of a uniform confining potential that grows qua...
متن کاملHypotheses for Near-Surface Exchange of Methane on Mars.
UNLABELLED The Curiosity rover recently detected a background of 0.7 ppb and spikes of 7 ppb of methane on Mars. This in situ measurement reorients our understanding of the martian environment and its potential for life, as the current theories do not entail any geological source or sink of methane that varies sub-annually. In particular, the 10-fold elevation during the southern winter indicat...
متن کاملGlobal distribution of near-surface hydrogen on Mars
[1] Neutron data observed using the Neutron Spectrometer aboard 2001 Mars Odyssey provide a lower limit to the global inventory of Martian water-equivalent hydrogen. Hydrogen-rich deposits ranging between about 20% and 100% water-equivalent by mass are found poleward of ±50 latitude, and less rich, but significant, deposits are found at near-equatorial latitudes. The equatorial deposits between...
